Extended Project

UPDATED 20160324 11:08:29

What is this course about? It is an exciting opportunity to complete an independent study project on a topic entirely of your own choosing. The best projects are able to bridge the gap between A level subjects, personal interests and career or university aspirations. It will take the form of either a 5000 word research project or an artefact (e.g. DVD/sculpture/art/event) with an accompanying 1000+ word report. What will I learn? EPQ is very different from other courses. You will complete the project largely unaided, independently making decisions, tackling problems and managing your time. A supervisor will guide you throughout the process in timetabled sessions, helping you develop skills in conducting research, writing and structuring a report, referencing material and project management.Successful students develop these skills and find that this benefits not only the study of their other subjects but provides a sound basis for further study. Being able to carry out research, synthesise and critique it, clearly communicate findings and present them to peers are vital skills for students entering university and the workplace. EPQ builds skills for life. Where will it take me? The Extended Project counts as half an A Level and is looked upon very favourably by universities as it exemplifies independent study skills; a valuable addition to any potential university applicant’s personal statement and curriculum vitae. What other opportunities exist outside of class? With free reign on topic selection the possibilities are almost endless – you can decide where you want your EPQ to take you. We work closely with Southampton University, accessing their library and recruiting them to run a number of sessions throughout the year. Students take the opportunity to liaise with and interview the public and local employers. The opportunities are limitless, but make sure your ambition is tempered by what is feasible to complete during your first year of A levels!
