Through practical engagement and collaborative active analysis, students will explore how to demonstrate character motivation and development using acting skills and the creative opportunities of staging a play to communicate the writer’s intentions and themes to an audience. During the course, students will perform 2 extracts to an audience whilst gaining and applying knowledge of theatre practitioners. Component 1: Exploration and Performance (8DR0/01) 60% /96marks: Students will study 2 plays to prepare for 2 assessed performances. Section A is a group performance led by teaching staff which will be explored and presented using the theories and techniques of a recognised theatre practitioner. An assessed written portfolio accompanies Section A only. Section B will feature the performance of a monologue from a contrasting play text. Component 2: Theatre Makers in Practice (8DR0/02) 40% /48 marks: Students will watch a piece of live professional theatre with staff. Their understanding of performance elements used to bring the play alive on stage will be assessed in Section A. Students will study a set text in lessons and explore characterisation, themes and production methods which will be assessed in Section B.
