The AS course is made up of three units and these cover ideas such as analytical chemistry involving titration, chromatography and colorimetry, methods of monitoring the human body such as X rays and CAT scans and an in depth study of a local organisation that uses science on a daily basis. There is also some more traditional content, including the study of the human circulation system, energy transfers and basic organic chemistry. The course also incorporates monitoring temperature, blood pressure and brain function. It also looks at the various ways in which diseases can be diagnosed or treated using MRI scans, CAT scans, ultrasound, radiotherapy and thermography. Students will learn about the structure and function of optical fibres, lasers and endoscopes and how they have applications in medicine too. The portfolio modules require students to carry out practical activities to look at how antiseptics work and produce a detailed training programme in order to develop a certain skill or physical attribute for an athlete in a particular sport.
