Religious Studies AS is split into two units, Philosophy of Religion and Religious Ethics. The course is 100% examination at the end of the year. The course uses debate, dialogue and discussion to prepare students for the skills needed in the examination. Assessment Objective One relates to Knowledge and Understanding and this is the majority weighting for the examination. Assessment Objective Two focuses on the skill of evaluation. This is assessed in a different section of the examination. Students are able to choose two questions, which comprise of a part a (AO1) and a part b (AO2), from a choice of four questions. Philosophy of Religion topics include Ancient Philosophy, Judeo-Christian Influences on Philosophy and Arguments for the Existence of God. Religious Ethics is 50% Ethical Theory including Natural Law and Kantian Ethics and 50% Applied Ethics including, Euthanasia and War. Students are encouraged to practice examination techniques in lessons to familiarise themselves with the constraints of writing under time constraints. Independent learning skills are developed by students making the most of their learning opportunities by engaging with news and current affairs, reading primary texts all supported by the use of resources available to the students from the lessons.
