Government and Politics AS

UPDATED 20161014 10:38:44

The AS Government & Politics course is comprised of two units Unit 1 is a study of People and Politics. Students begin their learning by answering profound and fundamentally important questions such as ‘What is democracy?’, ‘What are the functions of elections?’, and ‘Which are the key political parties that have shaped, and continue to shape, our everyday life?’ From this foundation, students then explore the intricacies of the UK political system. For example, students analyse the relative merits of our current ‘first past the post’ electoral system, and debate whether an alternative voting system would create a fairer, more representative democracy for the British people. Towards the end of unit 1, students will also learn about the intriguing world of Pressure groups, and will evaluate their various roles in shaping government policy. Unit 2 is an in depth study of Governing the UK. Students identify and then evaluate the role and purposes of our constitution, before considering the taxing question of constitutional reform.  The intricate relationship between government and Parliament is discussed, as is the role that the House of Lords plays in safeguarding the practices of the House of Commons. Students particularly enjoy debating whether or not the British prime minister is effectively a president; similarly they also enjoy gaining an understanding of the importance of civil liberties and role of the judiciary in safeguarding these liberties. In conclusion, the AS politics course enables inquisitive students to discover what exactly helps create the Britain of 2013 that many of our citizens take for granted. During the course, there is often the opportunity to visit the House of Commons, and meet the local MP to learn more about local politics.
