Unit 1: Global Challenges (60% of AS course/ 30% of A Level) The unit poses questions which seek to explore the meaning, causes and impacts of a number of headline global issues. Students will assess the challenges facing us in the 21st century surrounding population growth, globalisation, migration, natural hazards and climate change. The unit is assessed by an examination of 1 hour 30 minutes. Unit 2: Geographical Investigations (40% of AS course/ 20% of A Level) This unit focuses on fieldwork skills and the practical work undertaken to investigate places. The fieldwork centres around the topics of ‘Rebranding Places’ and ‘Crowded Coasts’. They give students the opportunity to look at the issues within these topics at both local scale as well as in a wider context. The unit is assessed by an examination of 1 hour 15 minutes. ‘Rebranding Places’ explores why regeneration is necessary and how public and private funding can be used to implement a range of rebranding strategies at a range of scales. ‘Crowded Coasts’ looks at the contrasting coastal environments, competing and conflicting land use and the pressures applied by continued development. Units 3 & 4 - for completion in Year 13 A2 Course
