This qualification has been developed for people wanting to work in the children and young people's workforce. It is suitable for those in employment or those working as a volunteer. It builds the knowledge and skills needed when working with children and young people from birth up to 19 years. You will be expected to attend college for monthly evening workshops and will be required to volunteer or to be employed in a suitable childcare setting for a minimum of 8 hours per week. Suitable childcare settings include: Pre-schools, Day nurseries, Child-minders, Kids' clubs, Children's centres, Nursery schools and Primary schools. There are 9 workshops which provide the underpinning knowledge for the mandatory units: Health and safety, Communication and teamwork, Behaviour, Positive environments and health and well-being, Safeguarding children and young people, Child development and factors that influence development, Child observations and supporting learning and development, Equality and inclusion and supporting children with special needs and Understand partnership working in services for children and young people. In addition you will be asked to choose a number of optional units which are designed to suit the age and needs of the children you are working. The most popular optional units chosen are: Support children and young people at meal or snack times, Support children and young people with disabilities and special educational needs, Contribute to the support of children's communication, language and literacy or Contribute to the support of children's creative development.
