Diploma in Site Carpentry (QCF)

This course aims to prepare you for employment and further training in the Construction industry. Topics covered are those that are required for the Construction of buildings. These include use of hand tools and portable power tools. The course is made up of the following mandatory units: Building Methods - how buildings are built and the role you as a carpenter & joiner would play; First fixing installation - how to fix carpentry components before plaster work e.g.- Door/windows frames, how to make and fit stairs etc.; Second Fixing installation - how to fix carpentry components after plaster work e.g.- Hang doors, fix skirting & architrave, fit kitchens etc.; Erect Structural Carcassing - how to erect the carcasses of buildings e.g.- floor joist, erect roof trusses, fit fascia and soffit boards etc.; How to Carry out Maintenance - how to carry out basic building maintenance e.g.- repair -brickwork, plasterwork, painting & decoration, guttering etc.; How to set up and Operate Circular Saws- how to work safely with workshop fixed machinery e.g.- rip saw, cross cut saw, panel saw and band saw; Communications - how the construction industry operates and communicates, how you as a carpenter would communicate with others. Additional compulsory units: Heritage - this unit explores the buildings of our past; Modern construction methods; Sustainability. Functional Skills: English, Maths & IT (if you do not already hold this qualification or GCSE at grade C or above). Personal and Social Development: This separate qualification will prepare you for life outside college, helping you to find a job. You will have a Personal Tutor to help you on an individual basis to maximise your potential. All students are expected to participate in field trips organised by the college to help supplement your course.
