C10C02B: How did the Napoleonic Wars encourage the development of the idea of nation states, and what happened to this idea after 1815? This 3 week course will look in particular at events throughout early nineteenth century Europe in order to investigate how the idea of nationalism was stimulated before 1815, and how the hopes generated by Napoleon's influence were frustrated after his defeat. These events still have an impact on the development of modern Europe, as seen to the conflicts in Yugoslavia in the 1990s and events in the Ukraine today. The course is for anyone wishing to understand more about the Napoleonic period and how it has had a fundamental impact on the development of modern Europe. No prior knowledge of the period is required, although an active interest in modern European history would be useful.
