C10C04DW: This 5 week course will explore how the social and cultural condition of African Americans developed between the age of Reconstruction in the 1860s and the movement for civil rights in the 1960s, including the impact of Martin Luther King. The course will provide a background to current racial tensions in the United States. This is an introduction to the history of civil rights in the United States. An interest in and general understanding of American history and politics would be useful, but not necessary. It will provide a useful foundation for the study of modern American or for those wishing to understand some of the issues affecting American society today.
