C10C01DW: This 5 week course aims to allow you to investigate the various causes of the civil war and to explore the impact of the war on American politics and society in the years of post-war reconstruction, especially on the lives of African Americans. (N.B. The course will not look in detail at the military campaigns of the war). This is an introductory course, designed for those interested in learning more about this crucial period in the development of the United States. No previous knowledge is required, but a general understanding of the nature of American history would be useful.
