Develop creative content while exploring increasingly inventive and imaginative book structures. Explore ways of creating books which combine traditional and contemporary book binding methods and techniques from different cultures throughout time. Learn western and eastern binding methods and ideas, techniques and materials to create original artworks in book form. This course teaches safe, reliable and adaptable methods of measuring, cutting, aligning, folding, gluing and pressing in order to produce original hand-bound books of sound construction and lasting beauty.Explore a range of creative and adaptable book forms through a series of progressive skills projects. You will learn through practical experience making different types of books. This course covers bookbinding materials and techniques: Progressive core skills projects, Developing a book structure from concept through finished work, Patterns building and structural design, Materials expertise and adaptation This course also includes an introduction module on gilding onto paper using water-based methods to produce burnishable metal leaf effects. This module is intended as a basic overview of the gilding process for students with little or no experience in metal leaf onto paper. Techniques are non-toxic and suitable for book design as well as other works on fine art quality papers.
