The goal is to write the first draft of a novel - 175 pages (50,000 words)Based on the American Nanowrimo (national novel writing month) programme, students will learn the fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Valuing enthusiasm and perseverence over painstaking craft, this is novel-writing for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved. Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly. In class students will write, pass on tales of woe and celebration, get inspiring tips from their tutor on how to keep going and occasionally read out the odd paragraph, if they wish. At the end of the course, those who have completed 50,000 words will get a certificate saying 'I wrote a novel in a month'.
