Philosophy & Ethics A2

UPDATED 20150828 13:17:36

If you are one of those people who can't stop asking irritating questions about things most people take for granted, then either you are daft or Philosophy is for you (or both?). Philosophy is all about thinking clearly and critically and working out your own arguments on the biggest issues of our lives. You also have the opportunity to learn what other thinkers have said on such topics. Course Content In the AS course we will begin with the most basic philosophical questions about human knowledge, and go on to study ethics including practical ethical issues such as abortion, euthanasia and genetic engineering. We will also consider sociological and psychological challenges to religion. The second year will focus on the idea of the conscience and consider whether our behaviour is determined. Teaching and Learning Styles We have many discussions and exercises, and also use teacher and student presentations, DVDs and research. Philosophical ideas are often intellectually challenging and need careful study and reflection in and outside the class. Assessment Each of the two modules in the AS course, and the A2 course are assessed by a written examination. Progression Opportunities You can go on to do degree courses in Philosophy, but Philosophy A Level is also highly regarded by university selectors for other subjects as evidence of thinking skills. This course comes under the umbrella of Religious Studies. Please note that Philosophy and Ethics and Religious Studies cannot be taken together.
