This is a practical, work-related course. The Level 3 BTEC Certificate is equivalent to one AS level and is completed before studying the Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma, usually taken in the second year, and is equivalent to one A level. All courses are highly suitable for students who are interested in careers such as social work, residential care management, housing, the health service, teaching and the probation service. The course combines both academic study and work experience as part of the programme. Students are required to complete a minimum of 100 hours' work training which will be carried out in a variety of care settings eg nurseries, care homes, hostels, hospices, hospitals or special needs centres. Students will study a variety of subjects over the two years including Sociological and Psychological Perspectives, Anatomy and Physiology, Communication Skills and Professional Development. There will be a mixture of coursework and one external assessment for Health and Social Care. All units are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. One overall grade for the qualification is awarded.
