A level chemistry builds upon chemical concepts developed at GCSE. At A level you will develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of chemistry and how they inter-relate; develop and demonstrate deeper understanding of How Science Works and develop safe and effective practical skills of manipulating laboratory equipment. In the first year you study 3 units: Unit 1: Atoms, Bonds and Groups. This unit begins with the basic chemical concepts of atomic structure, moles and equations, acids and bases, and redox. We progress to the model of electronic structure which underpins chemical bonding, structure and properties. In the last module we explore the development of the periodic table and focus on the alkali earth metals and the halogens. Unit 2: Chains, energy and resources. In this unit we step into the complex world of organic chemistry, including fuels and hydrocarbons, alkanes and alkenes, alcohols and halogenoalkanes, and other functional groups. We also examine green chemistry, including natural resources, the ozone layer, pollution and our role as chemists in these issues. Unit 3: Practical skills in chemistry. Practical skills are integrated throughout the course. The practical unit requires safe and effective laboratory practise, quantitative and qualitative observations, analysis and evaluation. This unit is tested by three practical exams. The A2 year is structured similarly to the AS year. We build upon many chemical concepts from AS, as well as introducing new topics and pre-degree level information and skills. The units covered are: Unit 1, rings polymers and analysis; Unit 2, equilibria, energy and elements; and Unit 3, practical skills in chemistry 2.
