On this course you will study a large range of physics concepts and use mathematical models to understand the real world. You will gain skills in working with abstract concepts and the application of mathematics to physics. At AS level you will study GCSE topics in greater depth and will meet many new ideas. At A2 level you will study higher level topics. You need to have a very good understanding of GCSE mathematics and studying A level mathematics would be beneficial. In addition, you should be motivated, committed and well organised in order to meet the demands of the course. The AS modules you will study are 'Mechanics' and 'Electrons, Waves and Photons'. The first module covers basic concepts such as forces, motion, energy, car safety and properties of materials. The second module covers electric circuits, waves and quantum physics. The AS practical exam will test a range of practical skills such as collecting and analysing data and interpreting the results. The A2 modules you will study are 'The Newtonian World' and 'Fields, Particles and Frontiers of Physics'. The first module covers a wide range of physics topics including Newton's laws and momentum, gravitational fields, oscillations and thermal physics. The second module includes topics such as electric and magnetic fields, nuclear physics, medical imaging and cosmology. The A2 practical exam will be similar to the AS exam but deals with more complex ideas and mathematics.
