Philosophy is concerned with the big questions: What is knowledge and what can I know? What is the good morally? What is truth and what is beauty? Philosophy is a rigorous intellectual discipline focused on reasons, arguments and justification, and at A2 you take on in-depth studies in moral philosophy, including normative ethical theories including Utilitarianism, Deontological Ethics and Virtue Ethics, as well as metaethics which concerns questions about the status of moral language and the objectivity or otherwise of moral values. You will also study the Philosophy of Mind, which concerns questions about the relationship between mind and body, the mental and the physical. Theories include dualism, behaviourism, mind-brain identity theories, functionalism and eliminative materialism. At A2 Level the following modules will be offered: Section A: Ethics This module is an in-depth study of normative ethical theories such as Utilitarianism, Deontology and Virtue Ethics together metaethics, where we investigate questions concerning the status of moral language and whether or not there are objective moral truths that can be known. Section B: Philosophy of Mind This module focuses on the mind-body problem. The central question is what is the relationship between the mental and the physical? We will study and critically evaluate a variety of different theories including Dualism, Behaviourism, mind-brain identity theories, Functionalism, Eliminative materialism
