Resistant Materials provides you with opportunities to apply your creativity to technological applications. You will explore innovative concepts on how to improve products through of use of a wide range of materials. You need to be able to sketch clearly, have creative ideas and be able to problem solve in order to do well in the coursework. If you haven't studied DT before, experience shows that your likelihood of success is greater if you have a grade B in one of GCSE Physics, Electronics, Mathematics or Art. AS units * Portfolio of creative skills coursework unit which is split into three sections: * Product Analysis: where you analyse a product for form, function, materials, construction and quality. * Design: where you design a product to your own brief and develop the design for manufacture. * Manufacturing: where you manufacture a product using a range of processes and skills in the workshops. * Design and Technology in practice written exams covers areas such as materials, manufacturing processes, quality assurance and control, mechanisms and Health and Safety, CADCAM. A2 Units * Commercial design coursework unit you design and make a project of your own choice. * Designing for the future in this A2 theory unit you will study information and communication technology in product design, operations management in manufacturing and design, manufacturing systems, smart materials and biotechnology, sustainable design and the environment and design movements. Students with an ambition to work in the areas of mechanical engineering, engineering design, production, or craft based industry will find this course of great interest.
