UPDATED 20150603 15:25:36

The world is currently undergoing a biological revolution! With modern advances in molecular biology, scientists have been able to make significant advances in genetics, medicine, agriculture and biotechnology. As a result topics like genetic engineering are rarely out of the news. Studying Biology will give you a greater understanding of traditional areas of biology and these topical issues. Within the first year you will study many basic concepts in biology including: Chemical elements and molecules Cells and transport Enzymes Evolutionary relatedness and biodiversity Gas exchange and digestion The second year will build on the first year modules and topics that are covered include: Respiration Photosynthesis Microbiology Homeostasis Nerves Genetics and inheritance Population Genetics There are four options in the second year which are: Neuroscience Skeletal Anatomy Food Science Immunology and Disease Biology is an exciting and relevant area of science which is currently experiencing huge growth! An introduction to biology, including disease the digestive system and gas exchange system is followed by a study of the great variety of living organisms. Investigative and practical skills are also assessed. In the second year, we study populations and environment (including how humans affect the planet's ecology), leading on to an investigation of control in cells and organisms (homeostasis and genetics), together with more practical skills. A variety of teaching methods are used including formal lessons, working in groups, practical and fieldwork. Assessment is through written examination and practical work.
