AS/A Level English Language and Literature

UPDATED 20150603 15:25:36

If you enjoyed learning about language, grammar, history, literary analysis and writing techniques at GCSE level, then the new A Level specification in English Language and Literature will inspire you to learn about spoken and written language from real and imagined worlds. On the new A Level, you will explore spoken and written language in literary, non-literary and multimodal texts of the 20th and 21st centuries (including, non-fiction writing, prose, scripted dialogue, transcripts of conversation, radio broadcasts, TV chat shows, podcasts and email) in order to learn about how spoken voices are used and how written voices are created. In addition, you will learn to respond analytically to literary novels and/or drama texts. Over the two years, you will apply your skills and knowledge of literary and linguistic concepts and approaches gained, and, from your wider reading, explore and evaluate the different ways writers deal with similar themes and issues and make creative connections between texts and contexts.
