We will be taking the following options from the EDEXCEL Government and Politics Specification. There are two units for AS Politics, which cover key issues such as: Unit 1. People and Politics - You will study the electoral system pressure groups, political parties and democracy in the UK. Key questions include; What is democracy, and how democratic is the UK? Why do so many people not vote, and does this matter? Should we change the way we elect politicians? How important are political parties? Are there any significant differences between them? How do pressure groups seek to gain influence? Do they strengthen or undermine democracy? Is it necessary for the UK to have electoral reform? Unit 2. Governing the UK - You will study the constitution and judiciary in the UK, as well as the powers of the PM, cabinet and Parliament. Key questions include; Does Britain need constitutional reform? Do we have an 'elected dictatorship?' How powerful is Parliament, and how could it become more important? Should we have presidential style Prime Ministers? Should appointed judges be allowed to block the will of the elected government? What are civil rights and how can they be protected? To what extent do we live in Police State? There are a further two units for A2 Politics. They cover similar themes about the American political system. Unit 3. Representative Processes in the USA. This unit looks at Pressure groups, Political parties and how elections work in the USA. You will also investigate the level of equality in US society. Key questions include; Is money vital to being elected as US President? Are there significant differences between the Democrat and Republican parties? Why are pressure groups so influential?
