History A Level

UPDATED 20150520 15:56:32

You will study the following periods of history which are all fascinating and significant both in terms of world and British history: a) Tudor history: concentrating largely on the reign of Henry VIII. Why did he divorce Catherine of Aragon? Was he a tyrannical leader or simply in need of some marriage guidance? Did he really want to change the religious beliefs of his people, or just get rid of the power of the Pope so he could marry Anne Boleyn? b) Germany in the 20th century: concentrating on the sort of country Germany was and the policies associated with their Imperial, Democratic and Totalitarian regimes. Hitler's rise to power and the impact of WWI and WWII are key issues we address. c) Civil Rights in America: we explore the struggle for equality in minority groups, looking particularly at the discrimination faced by African Americans. Why were they discriminated against and in what ways? How did they fight for equal rights and to what extent were they successful? How vital were Martin Luther King and Malcolm X in bringing about change? All of the above are assessed by internal examination. In addition students will write a piece of course work using both primary and secondary sources. This will give students the opportunity to study a topic which develops any of the above units in further depth, or as an 'offshoot' of it. They may also choose to study the suffragette movement in Britain or the causes of the World War 1. This will be approximately 4,000 words in length and will make up 20% of the final A level mark. Due to changes in Exam Board specifications, whilst we will continue to study all the topics outlined above it is likely that the units will be broadened to include more content and increase the time period studied. As the new specifications have not yet been ratified we are not in a position to confirm these details, although this situation should change in the near future.
