A Level Politics

You will learn about the way decisions made by Government influence people£s lives, and the way that people can participate in local, national and global politics. In the first year you will study our role as citizens in the democratic process. This will involve considering the nature of democracy and learning about the role of elections, pressure groups and political parties. You will investigate the powers of the Prime Minister, Cabinet and the Houses of Parliament in the political process. You will also examine how Britain£s membership of the EU has affected British politics. In the second year you will focus on the main ideas that have shaped British politics: Liberalism, Conservatism and Socialism, as well as other viewpoints such as Anarchism, Fascism and Feminism. You will also study the development of British politics and assess the impacts of Thatcherism, New Labour and the current coalition Government.
