A Level Chemistry

UPDATED 20161031 14:40:27

This course will appeal to students who have an interest in finding out how the world works, and enjoy practical science and problem solving. Chemistry allows you to learn more about the structure of the world around you through experiment, and find out about the chemical reactions that we encounter every day, whether it be in breathing, baking or driving a car. The course involves a number of practical exercises which are assessed and contribute 20% to the final mark. You may wish to specialise in Chemistry at a higher level, or broaden your studies to include a scientific subject. The first year of the course introduces the structure of atoms, molecules, molar calculations, chemical bonding and the periodic table. There is a further module covering chemical reactions and how these are affected by different conditions. You will also learn about organic chemistry, including the important chemicals produced from oil and the role of chemists in developing fuels and combating pollution.
