Advanced Apprenticeship in Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting Occupations

UPDATED 20150423 11:57:59

Apprenticeships are practical hands on programmes designed to provide you with relevant, practical training, which will enable you to progress within your chosen industry. As an apprentice you will be paid a minimum of 2.68 an hour if you are under 19 or over 19 and still in the first year of your apprenticeship programme. You will be employed between 30 and 40 hours a week. A few tins of emulsion and a lick of gloss can breathe new life into an old room or add the final touch to a newly built home. This is what painting and decorating is all about: finishing and restoring buildings and other structures. The work is varied and takes place on both a small and large scale, from hand painting ornamental fixtures in a stately home to applying a protective coating to the outside of an oil rig. A painting and decorating apprenticeship will teach you how to prepare surfaces, match colours, apply coatings and wallpaper and work with a variety of materials like gloss and Artex. You need to be good with your hands and able to follow instructions from the client. An interest in art and design is helpful, too. Like most construction-related jobs, painting and decorating will see you working on a variety of different sites, both indoors and out. You could be working at height, or in some hard to reach places, so fitness is a plus. Within the level 3 apprenticeship their is an element of supervisory skills required and the apprentice needs to be able to calculate prices of work for customers and work out how much materials need to be ordered.
