The pathway followed is dependent on the grade achieved at GCSE, screening and intended progress. There are approximately 5.8 million people employed in science-based occupations. This equates to 20% of the UK workforce employed in science roles. The Applied Science sector has a crucial role to play in delivering growth and allowing companies to compete in a rapidly growing global market. As a result, there are many exciting career opportunities, including laboratory technician, physiotherapist, industrial technician and sports scientist. This programme is suitable for those who aspire to work in the scientific industry and have a genuine interest in a future career in forensic, medical or environmental science. However, it is still possible to retain a broad focus on Applied Science if you wish. To complement the very experienced team of staff, there are also visiting lecturers from a variety of industry and academic specialists throughout the year. A commitment to study, enthusiasm for the subject and genuine desire for the career path is essential. Learners are required to take responsibility for their studies and must be prepared to organise and complete independent study outside their programme timetable of at least five hours per week to complete assignments. Name: Level 2 Applied Science Qualification title: BTEC Diploma in Applied Science (QCF) Qualification type: Assessment Hours will in general be from 08:45-16:00, however these may change when offsite activities are taking place. This timetable allows plenty of time to complete your assessments and approximately five hours per week will need to be put aside for independent study to complete assignments. People who are currently involved in the science industry will visit during the course of the year (subject to availability) to give an insight into their work; they have previously provided presentations, practical teamwork activities and advice on careers. Recent visitors have included Hampshire Constabulary (Forensics), Hampshire Fire and Rescue (Forensics) and NHS First Responder (Medical), Hazard Area Response Team (Medical). Offsite activities that enhance the programme will be arranged and are subject to change each year, however recent activities have included a visit to Eastleigh Fire Headquarters and Hampshire Constabularys Training Centre (Netley). The Level 2 Applied Science programme is an assessment based qualification and units are either internally or externally assessed. The College designs and assesses the internal assessments. However, Edexcel sets and marks all the external assessments. Each of the internal units will be divided into a series of assessments which have strict submission deadlines. Assessments are completed by the learner throughout the year and the resulting marks count towards their final qualification grade. The qualification can be awarded at Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction, depending on the quality and depth of assessment completion. English and Maths assessments will exam based.
