This qualification is built around the National Occupational Standards, developed by Skills for Logistics, and is aimed at employers or drivers wishing to demonstrate a higher level of practical capability than the more mechanical skills tested in a Light Goods Vehicle (LGV) driving test. This course is suitable for candidates already employed as a driver of Heavy Goods Vehicles. The aim of the qualification is to contribute to the skills, knowledge and overall performance of individuals. As well as covering the core functions of a driver this NVQ also focuses on vital skills needed to be able to offer a professional service such as communication, working with others and customer service. The level 2 qualifications for vehicle drivers who are able to show the minimum level of occupational competence required for a goods vehicle driver. The standards require driving skills to be shown whilst driving a goods vehicle that is laden with the candidate's typical load. While driving the vehicle, candidates are required to drive safely and with acceptable wear and tear on the vehicle. Candidates have the opportunity to show competence in unloading goods vehicles, and coupling and uncoupling goods vehicles. These two areas are covered by two additional units, which do not form part of the full qualification.
