Studying the past helps us to understand how the society we live in came to be, and to appreciate differences between cultures and between individuals. You will study topics such as- Britain 1906-1951, Life in Nazi Germany 1933-1945, Aspects of International Relations 1945-2004, and How Wars Begin- The European Powers and the Origins of Two World Wars, 1815-1941. For A2- Paper 1 - Aspects of International Relations, 1945-2004. Topic covers post-WW2 international relations and the development of the Superpowers- Cold War to detente- end of the Cold War and post-Cold War relations e.g. collapse of Yugoslavia, Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan. Exam- Essay based paper, 1 hour 30 minutes. Paper 2 - Coursework module (Historical Enquiry). Questions based on an introductory course - How Wars Begin- The European Powers and the Origins of Two World Wars, 1815-1941. This will involve a short introductory course covering great power diplomacy 1815-1875- nationalism in the Balkans- the causes of World War One- the Treaty of Versailles and failure of the League of Nations- causes of World War Two and Hitler's foreign policies. You will then need to choose one of these topics for your coursework. Historical Enquiry questions will be based on an aspect of the course, but chosen by the student, and must cover a period of 100 years. The enquiry will be 3500 words, and is assessed by the teacher. Worth 20% of A level mark.
