Who is the course for? Anyone with an interest in social and cultural issues and the ways in which the multicultural world of which we are all members is constructed. What can it lead to? An AS level qualification and points for university application. Transition onto A2 programme of study. What will I study? Two units: An introductory unit focusing on the Family and Households. Issues such as changing patterns of marriage, divorce, birth rate and family structure; the relationship of the family to the economy; gender roles and relationships within the family; the experience of childhood and old age, will be looked at. A second unit examining Education and Research Methods will also be covered. This will include issues like educational achievement in relation to gender, ethnicity and class; pupil subcultures, the hidden curriculum, and the impact of government policies on the direction and organisation of education. The application of sociological methods to the study of education is also covered in this unit.
