Lithography

UPDATED 20150414 13:17:40

Lithography was invented 200 years ago by Senefelder as a means of printing his own manuscripts. He worked out that he could draw on Bavarian limestone and then, after careful processing of the stone, he could print the drawing. Modern lithography, from metal plates, is now the main printing method used for colour posters, books and magazines. We have established a stone litho studio, with presses and litho stones for creating artist's prints. We create lithographs on stone in exactly the same way as Degas, Renoir and Toulouse Lautrec did in the nineteenth century. Picasso and Chagall continued the tradition into the 20th century, as lithography is a great medium for reproducing drawing and multi-coloured prints. Students will learn the process involved in drawing on the stone and printing from them.
