UPDATED 20150414 13:17:40

The aim of this course is to develop the existing skills of some students who have some experience already of watercolour as well as teach complete beginners the basics of watercolour. We will be exploring a wide range of watercolour techniques such as 'wet in wet', 'wet on dry' and creating textures using various methods such as sponging or wax resist. Students will be encouraged to experiment with a variety of techniques and your tutor will initially demonstrate these. Subject matter will be wide ranging, starting primarily with still life and drawing skills will be taught at the same time. Later we will be painting from natural form such as plants, flowers, rocks and shells. Other subject matter will include landscape, architecture and portraits. We will experiment with colour mixing and tonal values as well as building up layers of paint in glazes and washes. Issues such as composition will be examined and we will look at the work of known artists for ideas and an understanding of style and you will also be encouraged to develop your own style as the year progresses. The class is held in a supportive situation with assistance and encouragement from your tutor. You will be given a list of recommended materials, which you can buy at the school shop or in any good art shop.
