This will be an experimental course with a project-based structure. Throughout the course we will be exploring both techniques and ideas, and you will be encouraged to build up a personal language. We will work from observation, photography, memory and fantasy. We will look at the work of artists, especially those working now, and will use group discussion, both informal and formal, to share ideas and processes. You may find yourself making a delicate artist book in one project, and a large mixed-media work in the next. Drawing is an exciting and rich form at the moment, with artists using materials ranging from mud (Richard Long), embroidery (Louise Bourgeois, Tracey Emin) to fireworks (Cai Guo-Qiang). Scale and language can vary from the intimate (Michael Landy, artist books) to the monumental (Paul Noble) and drawing can take its imagery from sources as diverse as strip cartoons to gothic fantasy.
