This apprenticeship is suitable for those who are already working in a dental practice, or who are hoping to move into this area. You will need to be interested in oral health and enjoy science. You should also have a calm and helpful manner and be able to relate to people from all walks of life, including children and those with special needs. You’ll also need to be a good team player. There are no formal entry requirements as the apprenticeship programme will include training in maths, English and ICT skills. You will gain considerable knowledge and skill in relation to dental equipment, instruments and materials and will be able to work under minimum supervision as a key member of the oral healthcare team. You will also learn about: The roles and responsibilities of a dental nurse Principles of infection control in a dental environment Providing effective chairside support for the assessment of oral health and for the dental team Providing information and support to patients and to the dental team Students completing this course will achieve a level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing and a Technical Certificate in Dental Nursing, enabling you to register with the General Dental Council – the regulatory body for dentistry. Through training and experience, dental nurses may be able to progress to more senior roles, for example team leader or practice manager. Further training could lead to a career as a dental therapist or dental hygienist. The course will take about 18 months to complete.
