Students are drawn to this subject because they like to ask questions, such as, “How do we decide between right and wrong?”, “Are we really free?”, “Why is there evil and suffering in the world?”, “Should euthanasia be legal?”, “Does science challenge belief in God?” You will enjoy the course, if you like discussing the big questions of life and are looking for a course that is rigorous, challenging and academic. In Philosophy you will study epistemology/theories of knowledge (where our ideas come from and whether we can know about the external world), philosophy of religion (arguments for and against the existence of God, the origin and coherence of the ‘idea’ of God), and metaphysics (questions about the nature of reality), as well as a focus on Plato’s key text, The Republic. You will study thinkers from the ancient Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle, through modern philosophers such as Descartes, Hume and Kant, and contemporary figures such as Plantinga, Rowe, Anscombe, and Rorty.
