UPDATED 20150217 13:33:45

This course is designed to develop your understanding of the skills and knowledge needed to care for young children. There are two courses at this level, one with a regular work placement in a childcare facility and one without. To start on the course with a work placement, you will need to be work ready with a mature attitude. You study an introduction to working with children, understanding children's individual needs and how to treat them fairly. You will also gain an insight into your preferred learning style. The developing child unit will introduce you to ways of observing children so that you can support development through appropriate activities and care routines. You will also learn how to work with children when they move from one setting to another. A safe, healthy and nurturing environment for children covers the preparation and maintenance of a safe environment and how to safeguard children and adults through working practices. You will also consider your role in managing conflict when working with children. Children and play focuses on the importance of play in children's development. You will learn about the stages and types of play and how you can provide appropriate activities to support development through play. There will be an opportunity to consider your developing knowledge, to think about how you can improve your practice and set targets for your own professional development. On placement you will learn about the professional standards and how to apply these. There will also be the opportunity to observe development and to carry out planned play activities. Attendance in college and on your placement is a compulsory part of the course and essential for assessment.
