You will learn a variety of subjects relating to Animal Care. The subjects covered include: animal biology, accommodation and feeding, behaviour and handling, breeds and grooming, health and welfare. The course is taught by experienced tutors who have relevant industrial experience, including work with the RSPCA, veterinary nursing and environmental conservation. Throughout the year, there will also be several key dates when exotic and large animal handling will take place. You will be expected to attend all of these sessions. The large animal handling sessions take place at a farm, approximately 5 miles from Sheffield city centre. Your tutors will also arrange sessions when you will be able to bring your own pets into college in order to practice handling techniques, health checks, bandaging techniques and bathing and grooming. This is a compulsory part of the programme. Other visits will be arranged during the year to various places, such as zoos and animal establishments. You are expected to attend the visits. For some of the visits you will be asked to contribute towards the cost of the entrance fee and travel, which you will be able to pay in instalments throughout the year. The course is taught through theory and practical sessions and you will be required to complete 5 weeks of work experience throughout the year. This is arranged as 2 blocks during the year. Whilst you are on work placement you will be required to attend the placement Monday to Friday for the hours the placements state. Some placements (e.g. farms) may want you to start at 08.00am. Work experience is not an option. It is a compulsory part of the course. If you do not complete your placements you will not be able to achieve the qualification.
