Maths is one of our major strengths at Tower Hamlets College. We have a strong record of success, a large department with well qualified staff and a chance to take part in a range of exciting maths activities. In addition to our standard ASA2 Maths course, we offer A levels in Statistics and in Further Maths. Previous students have progressed to top universities. All AS students take 2 Core units, C1 and C2. These cover advanced algebra building on the work you did at GCSE. Your work will include calculus the mathematics of change, sequences and series, graph sketching and trigonometry. You will also choose either Mechanics M1 or Statistics S1. Mechanics is the mathematics that underpins Physics and Engineering, and is recommended for people taking Physics or Design Technology. Statistics is about analysing data and using probability to interpret real life situations. It is useful for Biology and for Social Science subjects such as Psychology, Sociology and World Development. In the A2 course you will take 2 more Core units, C3 and C4. You can choose to further develop your mechanics M2 or statistics S2, or take Decision Maths D1. Decision maths is the mathematics behind making decisions, and includes algorithms, networks and graph theory. It has many practical applications in project management and scheduling problems, and is useful for students taking Business, Computing and Electronics. Decision Maths leads to a branch of higher study called Operations Research, and to many exciting careers. Maths A Level is useful for a huge range of careers in science, business, social science and education. Our large offer means we can find the right course for you, whatever your future plans.
