Course description The course is made up of modules, some of which are compulsory and some of which are optional. The modules are designed to equip you with the necessary skills to grow your own fruit vegetables and flowers, whether for your family or as a small business, together with additional skills for maintaining the land on which you grow. There are also modules to help you start up a business and market your produce. About the tutor Tutors will vary according to the modules. All tutors have a wide range of experience and expertise in their field. Course content and outcomes While your personal objectives will be discussed and agreed at the first session, you can expect that during the course you will learn to: • Grow plants successfully, flowers, fruit and vegetables • Understand the factors that affect the growth of plants • How to deal with pests and diseases • Set up a small business and market your produce • Build and maintain the necessary structures (hedge maintenance, walling, fencing, etc) • Maintain an orchard • Other optional modules include Basic Beekeeping; What to do with your produce in a glut; Building a Composting Toilet and others. How will I learn? Whilst there will be some classroom work, you will mainly learn practical skills on a variety of sites throughout the region.
