To provide sound practical skills and technical knowledge for managing horses in a range of situations. There is a strong emphasis on developing all aspects of academic and practical abilities. The practical training is underpinned in lectures by a broad range of theory units including equine knowledge, science and business. Students develop the necessary horsemanship skills at the College£s own Equine Centre through riding and practical sessions delivered by a variety of fully qualified British Horse Society instructors. Course Units (may be subject to change) £Stable and yard management duties £Understand and promote animal health £Select, fit and evaluate horse tack and equipment £Prepare horses for presentation £Principles of animal biology £Animal anatomy and physiology £Principles of horse behaviour and welfare £Understand and apply the principles of horse fitness £Riding and exercising horses £ Riding horses on the flat £Riding horses over fences £Prepare and provide care for competition horses £Understand the principles of equitation £Equestrian event management £Working horses from the ground £Plan and monitor animal feeding £Business management in the land-based sector Optional Units £Principles of horse rehabilitation and therapy £ Equestrian teaching A three week period of work experience is included in the second year of the course to enable learners to experience an area of career interest within the equine industry.
