The course is available as a day or evening course at times to suit you – see the dates of our next courses below. You will learn about the technical and practical skills that are required to make a simple garment, including; - Basic patterns - Characteristics of different fabrics - Hand sewing skills - Working safely - Using a sewing machine - Standard and personal body measurements - Use of stand / mannequins - Pattern cutting and drafting - Pockets and other details - Zip insertions - Making up - Finishing techniques Learning in a small group, you will be taught by an experienced and friendly tutor who will help you achieve a high standard of work. The course is based at Newham College’s East Ham Campus (five minutes from East Ham tube station) in our modern and well-equipped garment production and pattern cutting workshops. By the end of the course you will have a folder of sewing samples and will have made a garment to take home. On successful completion of the course you will achieve the NOCN (National Open College Network) Making It In Fashion Award level 1 qualification, and you will have learned the practical sewing skills needed to make simple garments from a pattern.
