English Language AS/A2

UPDATED 20161124 15:33:56

AS English Language is designed for students who want to study the way language creates the vast variety of written and spoken material in our society. You will look at a broad range of different texts, using frameworks like lexis, semantics, discourse analysis, phonetics and graphology to categorise them and show how they work on a linguistic level. You will also write your own texts, choosing from an equally wide range of options - like short stories, magazine articles, blog entries, scripts and speeches. You will focus particularly on how language is employed in actual social contexts - like power-related situations (legal language, teacher language and so forth), gender-based interactions (the differences between the ways women and men speak) and technology-driven language (texting, the internet and emails, for example). A2 English Language B builds on the knowledge of linguistic features and language themes gained in the AS year, with particular reference to Language Change and Child Language Acquisition. It also gives you the freedom to conduct a linguistic investigation using your own data and to write a media text.
