Management of the countryside in a sustainable and integrated way has never been more important than it is today. Many of the valuable traditional skills remain, but future managers of habitats and wildlife will need the knowledge and skills of new technologies and the latest research for a more modern approach to a complex job. All countryside managers including gamekeepers, estate managers and rangers will need to be even more aware of changing agricultural, forestry and habitat conservation practice than ever before. Our extensive resources, industry contacts and locations in The Yorkshire Dales, Lake District National Park and The East Coast ensure students receive high quality learning and experiences. Alongside game and wildlife management, you will learn about subjects that could include ecology, habitat creation and conservation, estate skills, pest and predator control, introduction to game management, estate skills and health and safety. Our students will also have many opportunities to work on their practical skills on planned trips to local shoots, upland shoots and local deer farms. The course will include industry based work experience in the form of block or day work placements. Askham Bryan have their own shoots and learners undertake a range of tasks in conjunction with those shoots, including chick rearing, egg collection, habitat management, beating, clay pigeon shooting*, pest and predator control and any other tasks that may be available.
