The Heavy Vehicle Apprentice Framework is aimed at vehicles over 3.5 tonnes and covers many skills including removing and replacing of faulty parts to complex diagnosis of vehicle faults using the latest technology, tools and equipment. An Apprenticeship is a vocational, work-based programme that demonstrates competence and knowledge. With a combination of on-the-job training and assessments, and training through an approved body, Apprenticeships demonstrate the individual’s competence to do a job to a national standard. In addition to the core Apprenticeship framework requirements, there are separate requirements which include, Maths, English, ICT, Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) and Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS). A Level 3 VRQ Apprenticeship qualification. The main emphasis of the programme will be about developing the learners diagnostic skills in relation to vehicle system fault finding on the following systems. Engine, transmissions, steering, brakes, suspension, electrics / electronics. The work is similar to cars but on vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, such as trucks buses and coaches powered by diesel engines.
