Lacemaking – mixed ability How will this course help me? The course will provide the learner with basic bobbin lace skills and the opportunity to progress into the many and varied types of lacemaking. Who is the course for? All abilities. What can I expect to Learn? The course is entirely practical. One to one tuition is provided and learners progress at their own pace. Once basic techniques are mastered learners choose their own progression route adding skills as necessary. Learners are taught 14 bobbin laces, modern lace from Holland, Denmark, Switzerland and Finland and also non-bobbin Carrickacross (Ireland) and Battenberg. How will I learn? There may be demonstrations, a chance to ask questions and to practice at your own pace. How will I know how well I am doing? The tutor will help you to recognise how well you are doing and what you need to do to improve. This may include developing your own learning plan. Will I have to do any work outside of the sessions? You may be given tasks or activities to complete to practice in between and prepare for the next and future sessions. You tutor will give guidance at the first session. What will I need to provide? You will record finished work with photocopies / photographs and brief notes. If you own a lace pillow etc., bring it with you. If not, request the tutor to loan equipment for the first term, by which time you will be able to make an informed choice. Bring with you: a notebook, pen, pins (any) and scissors. Will there be any other costs? (e.g. materials, books, registration with a professional body, etc.) New Equipment £20-30 But second-hand is always available through tutor (sometimes free). Don’t buy anything until you’re underway. What can I do next? Lace making is on-going – there are 400 years to explore. Students can embark on the Lace Guild Assessment and will receive information about residential courses countrywide.
