Natural dyes and spinning How will this course help me? You will explore how to turn raw fleece into hand spun, naturally dyed yarn for use in knitting, crochet or weaving projects. Who is the course for? Anyone who wants to know how to spin and dye wool. Suitable for those with no previous experience of spinning or dyeing. What can I expect to learn? The course will cover: The different types of spindles and spinning wheels How to use a drop spindle and spinning wheel with prepared fleece. How to make safe natural dyes. Which dye plants growing naturally and which you can grow yourself Fixing dyes with mordants Testing colour results with different mordant and fabric/yarns combinations, including yarn you have spun yourself. How will I learn? There may be demonstrations, a chance to ask questions and to practice at your own pace. There are no exams or formal assessments. If you think you may need extra help with your learning, please ask your tutor or the Centre staff. We will try to help you. How will I know how well I am doing? The tutor will help you to recognise how well you are doing and what you need to do to improve. This may include developing your own learning plan. Will I have to do any work outside of the sessions? You may be given tasks or activities to complete to practice in between and prepare for the next and future sessions. Your tutor will give guidance at the first session. What will I need to provide? Wear old clothes or overalls that you don’t mind getting dirty for the dyeing sessions. Will there be any other costs? (e.g. materials, books, registration with a professional body, etc.) You may be provided with a reading list to support your learning. All of the costs of this course are covered in the advertised course fee.
