British Sign Language – ABC Level 1 How will this course help me? You will be able to use a limited range of simple signs to form statements and questions in familiar situations. Who is the course for? The course is designed for people who have successfully completed ABC Entry 3, or equivalent (approx. 24 hours study). For those who wish to practise and expand on skills already acquired and continue to build up confidence and fluency. What can I expect to learn? The course will cover a minimum of four of the following topics: Essentials and General Information Every Day Life (Daily routine, Hobbies, Work, Education, Home) Travel and Holidays Services & emergencies (includes illness, accidents, police etc.) Shopping Food and Drink. In addition, linguistic issues related to BSL will be covered, including: Eye contact, gaze & turntaking; fingerspelling; signing pace, flow and structure; handshape and movement. How will I learn? This course offers a friendly method of continuous assessment to gain accreditation. Learners will be required to complete some internal assessments, including a filmed dialogue with the tutor. A variety of teaching methods will be used, including: Demonstrations, Role Play, Videos to improve receptive skills, Group and pair work. How will I know how well I am doing? The tutor will help you to recognise how well you are doing and what you need to do to improve. This may include developing your own learning plan. If you think that you may need extra help with your learning, please ask your tutor or the centre staff. Will I have to do any work outside of the sessions? You may be given tasks or activities to complete to practice in between and prepare for the next and future sessions. Your tutor will give guidance at the first session. What will I need to provide? Bring along a pen or pencil and paper.
