Explore through Print: Part 2 - Shades of Grey

Shades Of Grey, Through this module learners will explore the rich history and contemporary applications of etching and aquatint. Building upon work in module one the course will focus upon developing the many styles of line and tone as well as exploiting the use of found surfaces and embossing. Students will be introduced to historical prints from artists such as Degas, Munch and Goya as well as contemporary practitioners such as Hockney, the Chapman brothers and Emin to name just a few. , Exploring etching and aquatint techniques students will produce work exclusively in greyscale as informed by the chiaroscuro tradition, and will experiment with different colour combinations and types of paper. The group will also visit pertinent exhibitions and/or studio visits. This course is suitable for both the novice and the more experienced printmaker.as well as painters and illustrators who wish to develop their skills through print.

Entry requirements

Please bring: pencils, pens, paintbrushes, paper, sketchbooks, Printouts of images that interest you, sketches of ideas., Protective clothing is provided, or you can bring your own apron and rubber gloves. The course fee includes most studio consumables (ink, solvents etc) but you will have to pay for paper, etching plates/ lino blocks etc. These are available to buy in the department at cost price.
