A detailed examination of monuments by Samuel Baldwin to study the meanings behind therepresentation of tomb-effigies, the origins of their production, their relationship to otherworkshops, and their place within the general history of monumental sculpture.Developments in the type of armour depicted on the effigies of knights will be examined andexplained. The cut and construction of dress for ladies and civilian men will be studied, as willthe textile components of the knights apparel. Related material, such as manuscripts andportrait paintings, will be included for comparison and clarification. Developments in thecutting and fitting of garments will be studied, as will the archaeological survival of textilesand accessories. The production of textiles, clothing and accessories will also be included.Anyone wishing to see good examples of monuments with effigies, should go to WestminsterAbbey, where some of the most costly and elaborate tombs that money can buy, are to befound. Amongst, what is the largest collection of effigies in this country, there are knights inarmour, ladies in fashionable dress, but mainly lords and ladies in ceremonial and officialrobes. Anyone wishing to see a comprehensive collection of arms and armour, should visitthe Wallace Collection. The arms and armour at the Wallace are worth a visit purely for theirartistic merits, because of the very high levels of craftsmanship involved in their production,which includes not only the use of steel, but many examples with inlays of woods, ivory,enamels and precious metals.
