Oil Painting from Scratch

Make your own oil paint from ground pigment and investigate different mediums and varnishes ready for your own painting. Stretch and prepare canvas and other surfaces. Learn about colour palettes and experiment with colour mixing. Using your hand-made paint explore different oil techniques, including 'alla prima', underpainting, layering, palette knife and glazes, working from observational still life, and portraiture. Some materials provided, but you will need to bring your own brushes and canvas can be purchased through the college.

Paint making equipment is provided, along with the initial pigments and medium. If more is needed then students can purchase pigments through the college. Canvas is available through the college., A Notebook - there will be lots of information to collate, At the initial session you will be given advice on the type of brushes, palette knives needed., Please wear old clothes or an apron - making paint is a messy business!
